Re: why discus nip at plants?
I've seen this behavior in younger discus. They might just be exploring. How old are yours? If they're under a year, it could just be a phase. My group stopped after they hit maturity. Tank's got Amazon swords and Java fern, right?

Re: best plants for discus aquariums
True, but plants help with water quality. They absorb nitrates, which is a bonus for Discus. My tank's nitrate stays under 10ppm thanks to the plants.

Agree with Vista on Amazon Swords. Also, try Java Fern. It's low-maintenance and thrives in Discus conditions. Tie it to driftwood or rocks. Mine's been growing for 2 years with zero issues. Just avoid burying the rhizome.

Re: can discus handle high nitrates?
20 ppm is manageable if it's stable. Wild-caught Discus are more sensitive, but domestics can tolerate up to 40 ppm if acclimated slowly. Key is consistency—no spikes. What's your feeding routine? Overfeeding can crank nitrates fast. I run mine at 30 ppm with daily 10% changes, Eheim 600, and they ...

Re: keeping discus in a community tank
Thanks for the tips, everyone. I've got sand substrate and a Fluval FX4 filter. Lighting is moderate, 6 hours a day. The Angelfish are about a year old, so might be sketchy. Gonna try adding one Discus first to test the vibe.
Smart move starting with one. Watch how it interacts, especially ...

Re: keeping discus in a community tank
I've kept Discus in a community tank for years. Key is consistency with water changes, at least 50% weekly. Your temp is good, but watch the Angelfish. Also, what's your substrate? Bare bottom or sand works best to keep waste from building up.

Re: Lone Discus
I've noticed my discus hasn't been eating much. He'll swim up to the food, but doesn't take a bite. I'm currently feeding him Cobalt Discus Hans flakes, but I also have Vibra bites and a few other options on hand. Should I try something different? Maybe mix it up a bit?

I finally got a picture of my discus to upload. I'm still keeping the lights off to minimize stress, so it's not the best quality.

Re: Lone Discus
I didn't notice any symptoms of hex, but after talking to a few people, they suggested I treat the tank as a precaution. Apparently, stress can trigger it, so I figured it's better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for the advice, I'll up the metro dosage to the recommended 500mg per 10 gallons tomorrow. The fish is eating well, which is a relief.
