Re: Discus fry tank heater choice

Seconding Eheim Jager. Used one for my last batch of fry, no issues. Also, consider a backup thermometer. I've seen heaters fail even from good brands. My tank's got a digital one stuck to the side, gives me peace of mind.

Re: best plants for discus aquariums

Yo, Anubias is a vibe too. Super chill plant, doesn't care about your water params. I've got mine glued to a piece of spiderwood, and my Discus love hiding in the leaves. Just don't plant it in the sand, or it'll rot.

Second this. Anubias Nana is my go-to. It's small, so it won't overcrowd the ...

Re: discus tank water prep tips

Plants are key for stability. I've got Amazon swords and java fern, low light so they don't need much. Lighting's on for 6 hours, ramps up slowly with a timer. Fish are less skittish with dimmer light. You guys use any tannins? I like the blackwater vibe, keeps them calm.

Re: discus tank water prep tips

I've got a similar setup, 75 gallon with a canister filter. Used Seachem Prime during cycling. Took about 3 weeks to stabilize. Now I do 30% changes twice a week. My Discus seem happy, but I'm not sure if I should increase the frequency. They're eating well, mostly frozen bloodworms and flakes ...

Re: discus tank water prep tips

Yo, RO water's a solid choice, but you gotta watch the TDS. I keep mine around 150 ppm for juvies. For cycling, throw in some FritzZyme or Stability to speed it up. Test daily for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates. Once it's stable, start with 50% water changes every other day. They're messy eaters, so ...

Re: Future Discus Setup

I appreciate your honesty, I'd rather not learn the hard way and lose any discus due to my inexperience. So, I'll stick to the fundamental principles for keeping them healthy and thriving. From what I've gathered, if I want to maintain a simple weekly maintenance schedule with just one big water ...

I must say, that's a really good point. Using 1.5-2.0 cms of sand instead of 5.0 is a great idea. It will make vacuuming a breeze and avoid pockets of gas. Plus, it will give my fish more volume of water. I can see how deeper substrate can get ...

Re: Future Discus Setup

Thank you for this amazing answer. Everything you mentioned makes perfect sense and is well described. I can now relate the feeding philosophy for younger discus to human baby nutrition habits. It's clear that more frequent feedings can help reduce aggression in discus, and I appreciate the ...

Re: Future Discus Setup

Hello and thanks for the response.
I've thought about the displaced water volume, and assuming 30 kgs of sand and 5-10 kgs of rock, I estimate my actual gallons to be around 55.

Concerning feeding, I've read about the requirements of juveniles, but I'm planning to get ...
