Re: can discus thrive in hard water?
For real, it's a mixed bag. My crew's in 320 ppm, but I buffer with peat in the filter. They're cool with it, but I'd never try wilds in this setup. Tank's 100 gallons, blackwater style, with oak leaves and low light.

Re: why is discus tank always murky?
Yep, bacterial bloom is likely. I had the same issue in my 55-gallon. Added a UV sterilizer and it cleared up in days. Also, cut back on feeding for a bit. Discus don't need as much as you'd think.

Re: discus aggression during feeding
I've seen this too! My discus chill out when I feed them in smaller groups. Maybe try dividing the tank with a temporary barrier during feeding? It's worked for me. My tank is 55 gallons, 5 discus, no other fish. I use a sponge filter and keep the temp at 82F. Water changes every 5 days.

Re: discus tank substrate pros cons
Sand's the way to go, imo. It's gentler on their delicate barbels and looks more natural. I've had mine on fine white sand for a year, zero issues. Just gotta stir it during water changes to prevent dead spots. My crew's thriving, 6 adults in a 90-gallon with a pair of Eheim filters.

Re: Minnow care guide
I've got a small school of White Cloud Mountain Minnows in a 10 gallon tank, but they seem kinda skittish. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Temp's at 72F. Any tips to help 'em chill out?
How many minnows do you have? A school of less than six might make them feel ...

Re: Having trouble with my aquarium tank
I've been doing a 30% water change every 10 days, and for the Thrive, I follow the bottle instructions, which is 1 ml per 5 gallons, usually once a week. My tank's well cycled, so ammonia and nitrite stay at 0, and nitrate's around 25-30 before the water change. pH's 7.5, but I don't have a way to ...

Re: Having trouble with my aquarium tank
Honestly, I used to think the same way and was having huge problems. Plants weren't growing, algae was taking over, and I inject CO2 - the last thing I wanted was for it to escape into the atmosphere. I EI dose dry fertilisers and have my lights on for 7 hours a day.
The only big change I made was ...

Re: Having trouble with my aquarium tank
I had a similar issue in my 65-gallon tank recently, and it boiled down to water flow. The fertilizer nutrients just weren't being circulated effectively around the plants.
I've since adjusted the setup - the filter outlet is now a spray bar, and I've added a power head just beneath the water's ...

Re: Having trouble with my aquarium tank
I'd love to help you troubleshoot, but more data would be fantastic. That being said, I think we're dealing with a nutrient issue, likely tied to an imbalance of light and nutrients. I've taken a look at the Thrive site, and I'm curious - which of their liquids are you using? There are 11 ...
