Pre-filter sponges are a must. I swap mine out every 2 weeks and rinse the old one in tank water. Keeps the main filter from clogging. My Discus are in a 75 with a SunSun, and the water's crystal clear.

Sump's overkill unless you're running a monster tank. Stick with a canister. I've got a SunSun HW-304B on my 75 gallon, and it's been running smooth for 2 years. Cheap, easy to maintain, and handles the bio load fine. Just add extra ceramic rings. My Discus are healthy, no issues.
