Re: LED vs T5 for coral growth
Been running LEDs for a year now, but my Acropora aren't thriving like they did under T5s. Anyone else notice slower growth with LEDs? My tank's a 75-gallon mixed reef, parameters are stable, 8.1 dKH, 420 calcium, 0.03 phosphate.
T5s have broader PAR distribution, which Acros love. Try ...

Re: LED vs T5 for coral growth
LEDs can work, but spectrum matters more than intensity. I've had success with a hybrid setup, T5s for spread and LEDs for pop. What's your photoperiod? My SPS exploded after tweaking blues to 10 hours, whites to 6.

Re: Choosing the right soil substrate
I'd recommend a layer of about an inch of lava rock under the soil, it's inert so won't affect the plants' rooting. This will just provide pockets to prevent the soil from compacting, then you can add your baked soil on top.

Re: Choosing the right soil substrate
I'm curious about carpeting plants or amazon swords - will they still root well in the sand?

Choosing the right soil substrate
Getting into live plants has me revamping my 10-gallon tank, currently just gravel as the substrate.
The plan is to have snails in there, maybe a couple neptunes later on, once it's fully cycled.
I've come across the idea of using organic potting mix as a nutrient layer at the bottom, but what ...

Re: Caring for a pothos plant
I've had a pothos in my HOB for about a month, then I decided to move it into the tank. That was four years ago and it's still thriving, getting bigger all the time.

guide to a thriving planted tank
I've been thinking about setting up a planted tank and I'd love to hear some thoughts from you guys. What are the essentials to get right once the basics are in place - I'm thinking lighting and ferts are key, but what's the best approach? Also, I've got a glass top on my tank - will that work with ...
