Re: are airstones necessary for marine tanks?
You don't actually need an air stone in a freshwater tank, to be honest. The bubbles are in the water for such a short time that they don't really contribute to gas exchange. There's a bit of surface agitation, but it's minimal compared to directing the outlet of a powerhead or filter at the surface ...

Re: is keeping sharks as pets allowed?
If you're set on keeping one of these sharks as a pet, I'd recommend getting in touch with your local aquarium to see if they'd be willing to take it in once it outgrows your tank. Blacktips, for instance, can reach lengths of over 5 feet, and keeping them in a home aquarium would likely stunt ...

Re: need assistance with eels
I just got back from the aquarium store and I'm really interested in getting a snowflake eel, they're part of the moray family. Thing is, I found out they're notorious escape artists and can slip out of tanks pretty easily. I'm looking for some advice on how to eel-proof my tank, basically what I ...

Re: Marine fish recommendations from the community
I wouldn't want an 8"+ clown trigger in a 240l tank.
I've been warned about the clown triggers and I'm starting to think they might not be the best choice for this tank.
I'm not sure about the lionfish either - they can get pretty big, can't they? I think I mean Pterois volitans, by the way - is ...

Re: Marine fish recommendations from the community
Hi Sam,
Thanks for sharing your tank setup and the fish you're interested in keeping. I have some thoughts on the ones you've listed.
First off, Clown Triggers are beautiful but they can get massive and quite aggressive, so I'd advise against them for your tanks. The Picclyasso Trigger is also ...

Re: is guppy a saltwater fish?
Handy for feeding to your frog/lion fish...
Probably not the best idea in the long run, though. Brackish and freshwater fish have distinct physiological differences, and repeatedly feeding them freshwater feeders can allegedly cause fatty deposits to form around the liver. Still, it's worth noting ...

Re: Is a 10-gallon saltwater fish tank a viable option
For some basic info on setting up a saltwater tank, I'd recommend checking out the pinned threads in the marine sections. That should give you a good starting point. As for your specific setup, there are just too many variables to consider - tank size, equipment, and the type of system you want to ...

Re: Is this a barracuda?
Barrapyropes get a mention in Reef Fishes Volume 1. They're not exactly suitable for home aquariums, given their size. Public aquariums, on the other hand, might find them an interesting addition to their displays.

Re: information on the blue spotted ray
It's amusing to see you respond with personal attacks instead of addressing the facts. I suppose it's easier to deflect when you have no concrete evidence to back up your claims.
You mention that I spend all my time reading scientific literature, but it only took me a few seconds to find credible ...

Re: information on the blue spotted ray
I'm curious to know if anyone on here keeps blue spotted rays. I don't want one myself, but I do keep reticulated rays in a freshwater tank, which are quite demanding even compared to a fully stocked 150g reef tank. If I ever lose my two freshwater rays, I'd be interested in converting my big tank ...
