Re: discus breeding tank setup cost
I'd stick to 55 gallons for breeding. More stable water, less stress on the fish. A 29 is sketchy unless you're super experienced.

Re: can discus live with shrimp?
My Discus are in a 55 gallon with a sponge filter, temp at 82°F. Tried Ghost shrimp once, and they vanished within a week. Maybe my guys are just extra hungry, but I wouldn't risk it unless you've got tons of cover.

Re: discus tank water polishing tips
yo, had the same prob last month. switched to seachem clarity, worked like magic. my tank's 55g, 5 discus, eco-complete substrate. also cut back on flakes, gonna try beef heart soon. weird vibe how the cloudiness comes back tho.
Clarity is a flocculant, binds particles for mechanical removal ...

Twice a day, small portions. Overfeeding spikes organics. If you're using bloodworms, thaw and rinse them first. My discus get a mix of pellets, brine shrimp, and occasional beef heart. Tank stays clearer with varied diet.

Re: discus tank water polishing tips
Cloudy water usually means bacterial bloom or fine debris. Check if your filter media is clogged. I use a pre-filter sponge on my intake, helps catch particles before they mess with the canister. Also, try reducing feeding for a couple days.

Check tank vibrations too. My washer nearby made them skittish till I moved it.

Re: is my filter harming my plants?
I've got the same issue with my Java Fern. The leaves are getting torn up. Maybe it's the filter type? I'm using a canister filter, but it's set to low flow.

Re: Discus color strains comparison
I've only kept Blue Diamonds. They're easy to care for and look great. My tank is 60 gallons, with a hang-on-back filter, gravel substrate, and a few plants. Temp is 83°F. I do 25% water changes weekly. They're not as flashy as some other strains, but they're reliable.

Re: Lone Adult Discus
I think getting more discus is the way to go. If you can swing it, try to get at least three around the 5" size. I've got a similar situation with a lone 5" discus in my 60 gallon, and I've recently picked up four 3" ones that I'm quarantining before introducing them to him ...

Re: Green Discus
Got some good sunlight on my tank this afternoon, so I snapped a couple close-ups of my discus. They're about 4" now. I was told they'll take on more of that green shine when they hit 6".
