Re: Are nitrates beneficial?

Yo, nitrates ain't all bad. Plants gotta eat too, right? My Discus chill at 10 ppm, and the Valisneria's going nuts. Just don't let it spike, or you're gonna have a bad time.

Re: best discus tank mates for color

Harlequin Rasboras are underrated. That orange triangle on their sides? Chef's kiss. I've got 15 in my 60-gallon, temp at 85°F, and they school like they're in a music video.

Facts. Also, check out Congo Tetras if you want shimmer. Their scales catch light like disco balls, but they need a ...

Re: Nitrogen cycle won't start

Don't worry about the situation, just do 90% daily water changes for a month or two and your discus will be fine. I know it's easier said than done, but it'll fix your discus for sure. Good luck with that.

By the way, having just 3 discus isn't ideal, you should've bought at least 6 of them. If ...

Re: Nitrogen cycle won't start

I completely agree with CycleFan's point - gravel is indeed where the majority of beneficial bacteria (BB) resides. This thread is a perfect example of what happens when you remove the substrate and go barebottom, even with a mature filter. I've seen it time and time again - a huge ammonia spike and ...

Re: Nitrogen cycle won't start

discups,

I'm curious about your tank's starting point. Was it pristine, without bio-media from an established filter, or without SafeStart? Also, how much ammonia were you dosing?

I'd recommend adding a double dose of Safe Start. It can't hurt and might give your BB culture a boost.

You started ...

Re: Nitrogen cycle won't start

Thanks for all the advice, I really appreciate it. I'm planning to keep the ammonia at zero with water changes, Prime, and TSS until the cycle kicks in again. I have a couple of questions though. If Prime can detoxify ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, why do I still need ...

Nitrogen cycle won't start

I set up a 40-gallon tank a while back and did a fishless cycle for two weeks - nitrite and ammonia dropped to zero. Added 3 small discus, then decided to ditch the gravel and go bare bottom. Thought the filter bacteria would pick up the slack, but boy was I wrong.

Noticed the discus getting darker ...
