One last thing—check your alkalinity. Favias can get sketchy if alk swings too much. Stable alk around 8-9 dKH usually keeps 'em happy without the aggression.

Re: Favia coral aggression issues
Favias can be real bullies, especially if they're well-fed and happy. What's your feeding routine like? I've found cutting back on direct feeding helps reduce their aggression. Also, try moving them to a lower-flow area—they extend less when flow's gentler.

Yeah, pics would be sweet. Also, if anyone's got a frag to trade, hit me up. Got some zoas that need a new home.

Yep, timing's key. I fragged mine mid-afternoon once, and it sulked for weeks. Now I only do it right after lights-out. Also, keep some iodine dip handy in case the cuts get sketchy.

Re: is my tank too small for plants?
A 10 gallon should be fine for Java Fern. How's your water flow? They don't like strong currents. Also, what's your lighting schedule? Too much or too little can mess with them.
Yep, flow matters. I'd check your ferts too. Java Fern is low-tech but still needs nutrients. Maybe bump dosing to ...

Re: best beginner plants for hard water
Anubias and Java Fern are basically bulletproof in hard water. I've got both in my 30-gallon with similar params, and they're thriving. Just don't bury the rhizomes, or they'll rot. Tie 'em to driftwood or rocks instead.
Yep, second this. My Anubias has survived multiple tank crashes. It's like ...
