Black sand's a great choice. It's easy to clean, and it makes the colors of the fish stand out. My betta's in a 10-gallon with black sand, a canister filter, and some anubias. Works like a charm.

Agree with timbrs. Better safe than sorry. My 75-gallon's got a Torch on the left rockwork and Hammers on the right, zero contact. I dose Red Sea AB+ weekly, and they've never stretched more than 4 inches. What salt mix are you using? I swear by Tropic Marin.

What's your tank size, and could you share your current water parameters? Also, would you be able to post a picture of your betta?
I have a 21-liter tank, roughly 5.5 gallons.
Unfortunately, I don't have a water testing kit on hand, so I'm not sure about the parameters, but the temperature is ...
