The park I went to had a ton of loose rock from all the hill blasting they did for the roads - most of it's the same type, I just didn't grab as much as I needed when I was there.

I really appreciate all the feedback on my tank. It's been a work in progress for ages - over a year now. I collected most of the rocks myself, but I didn't have enough, hence the mix. Just finished redoing my malawi tank and I'm a bit more pleased with it, but still not quite there with that natural look I'm after.
Glad my fish decided to make an appearance for the photos though.

Considering the vibrant red hue, I'm inclined to think it's likely a Red Forest Jewel Cichlid, although Hemichromis lifalili is also a possibility.

Appears to be a typical Red Jewel. Many Jewels develop those spots as they mature. It's pretty standard, in my experience.

can water be too hard for Mbuna? i'm in a hard water area and my kettle's got a serious chalk build-up - is this water too harsh for them? i've got the salts to simulate their natural water composition but using tap water seems like a gamble, or should i just add a hint of trace elements to it ...

Calcium bicarbonate's pH level is actually at 8.2, which means it can indeed help raise the pH of your water.
