Re: Xenia umbellata overgrowth control
Good call on the flow adjustment. Let us know how it goes. And yeah, Red Sea's got a lot of good stuff for Xenia, so switching salts might help too if this doesn't work.

Re: Xenia umbellata overgrowth control
Xenia's a beast once it gets going. I had the same issue in my 120-gallon. You gotta cut it back manually, but be careful—it'll slime up and mess with your water quality if you're not quick. I use bone cutters to trim the base, then siphon out the bits. Also, try reducing your light intensity to 60 ...

Re: Discus tank water flow guide
The Fluval 407 can be pretty powerful for Discus. I'd recommend reducing the flow rate to about 50%, they prefer calm water. Also, try adding a spray bar to distribute the flow more evenly. What's your substrate? Sand helps buffer the current too.

Re: why is my discus so skittish?
I'd second the lighting thing. Discus prefer subdued lighting, and if the tank's too bright, they'll stay on edge. Also, what's your water change routine? Frequent small changes are better than infrequent large ones. And are you using a water conditioner? Some brands can leave behind residues that ...

Re: tank cleaning routine for discus
yo, drip's the move. my dudes used to freak til i got a drip system. now they don't even notice changes. also, you testing for chlorine? even if you condition, some tap's sketchy. grab a cheap chlorine test, just in case.
Chlorine's a big one. Municipal water often spikes it seasonally. I ...

Re: identifying mystery plants: can you help?
The first photo appears to be an Echinodorus species, commonly known as Burhead or Amazon Swords. Given the leaf veins, rosette form, and what seems to be a rhizome in the substrate, it shares characteristics with Echinodorus. However, I must note that the taxonomy of this genus is often confusing ...

Re: identifying mystery plants: can you help?
I'm inclined to think the bulb plant is an apongeton, although my experience with a nattans was a bit different - the leaves were more crinkled and grew upwards. Mine grew like crazy, to the point where it was hard to trim and maintain a decent appearance, eventually taking over the tank and forcing ...

I've had success breeding Stendker reds, with the offspring turning out just as vibrant as the parents. I attribute this to my beef heart mix, which seems to bring out the natural colors in the fish.

Re: I fed hormones to my fish. Outcome is amazing.
Doing experiments in-house doesn't bother me, as long as the fish stay put. I once ran an experiment with breeding pairs in 100% RO water, curious about the long-term effects. The time frame escapes me, but it was somewhere between a year and two ...

In the end, it's gonna do more harm than good to your fish. One reason people think discus are tough to raise is they buy 'em from the LFG that use hormones, and those livers are already shot. Minor exposure might not be a big deal, but long-term ...
