You could consider using epiphytes like Anubias or mosses to cover up any gaps or openings in the wood, they'd not only block off the hole but also add some extra hiding spots for your Crowntail Betta.

I've had some success with it, but I gotta warn you, if it's emersed when you buy it, be prepared for some die-off when you submerge it.

I've had some good luck with BucePlant, they're actually an Aquarium Plants Factory, so you can get some pretty unique stuff from them.

Try giving the male frozen or live foods, see if that encourages him to build a bubble nest.

TC plants are basically plants grown in a super clean environment, so you don't gotta worry about any pests, algae, or diseases. They're usually in a cup, and you get a decent amount of plant.

Attach it to hardscapes, I use super glue gel or fishing line, seems to work pretty well for me.
