Re: why discus swim near surface?

Interesting point. Tigercub, what are you feeding? Some pellets float too long and make them linger at the top. Sinking pellets or frozen might help.

Re: why discus swim near surface?

Could be a few things. First, check if they're gasping. If they're gulping at the surface, it might be low oxygen. Try increasing surface agitation with an airstone or adjusting your filter output. Also, what's your feeding routine? Overfeeding can mess with water quality even if params look good. I ...

Re: discus tank water testing kits

Anyone tried the Hanna Checkers? Pricey but no guesswork with digital readouts. My Discus are in a 55-gallon bare bottom, and I'm paranoid about ammonia spikes since I feed beef heart daily. Hanna's ammonia checker gives me peace of mind.

Re: best food for LPS corals

I've been feeding my LPS a mix of mysis shrimp and reef roids, but they don't seem to be thriving. What's the best food to get them growing faster? My tank is a 40-gallon with T5 lighting, and parameters are stable, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5 nitrate.

How often are you feeding? Overfeeding can ...

Re: discus tank setup for shy fish

Try adding some almond leaves. The tannins seem to calm 'em down, plus it makes the tank look more natural. Just don't go overboard or the water'll look like tea.

Re: discus breeding water parameters

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. Gonna try bumping the temp to 86°F, adding almond leaves, and upping water changes to 25% daily. Also ordered a dimmer for the lights. Appreciate the help!

discus breeding water parameters

What's the ideal water temp for breeding Discus? My pair's in a 55g, pH 6.5, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate, but they're not spawning. Using RO water with a TDS of 100, temp at 84°F. Tankmates are 6 cardinal tetras and a bristlenose pleco. Substrate is bare bottom, sponge filter, and a 200W heater ...

gold wrote: Thu May 08, 2025 7:48 pm Yep, more cover is key. Mine stopped being jumpy after I added a bunch of valisneria. Also, try feeding at the same times every day, they like routine.
Totally agree. Consistency is huge with discus. They're like clockwork once they get used to a schedule.

Re: why is my discus so skittish?

Skittish behavior can be from a bunch of things. How's the lighting situation? Bright lights can freak them out, especially if the tank's in a high-traffic area. Also, how often do you do water changes? Discus are super sensitive to water quality, even small fluctuations can stress them. I'd check ...

Re: Nitrogen cycle won't start

discups, I'm curious - did you start with a completely new setup, no pre-existing bio-media or SafeStart? And how much ammonia were you adding to the tank?

Adding a double dose of Safe Start might not be a bad idea. It's unlikely to cause any harm and could ...
