Re: discussion of jewels and lionhead
I'm thinking of getting a jewel pair tank, and I'm curious if a pair of lionhead cichlids would be able to handle the jewels' aggression.
My tank is 4ft and 55 gallons, so it's a decent size. If the lionheads wouldn't survive, that's alright, the jewels are my main priority, but I do think the ...

Re: Identifying a pelvicachromis teaniatus variant
If they're taeniatus, we're looking at two main types in my area - the red and green varieties.
If we're dealing with Pelvicachromis kribensis, as opposed to the hobby's pulcher, then it's tough to say - the fish seem too stressed for their identifying features to be visible.
In Australia ...

Is my tank compatible
I've been thinking about setting up a lake Tanganyika community in my 3ft tank - it's 3x2x2 so around 85-90 gallons, I think. I'm interested in keeping a trio of calvus - one male, two females - and adding eight sardine cichlids. Would this work in a tank of this size, and are there any other fish I ...

Re: Choosing the best tank for a single species biotope
By the way, the Pantanal isn't actually a river itself, but rather a massive wetland area with multiple rivers flowing through it. What's really interesting is that about 80% of the Pantanal is made up of floodplains that get completely flooded during the rainy season, and it's home to as many as 12 ...

Re: Choosing the best tank for a single species biotope
For a South American single-species biotope, I'd recommend a 20-gallon tank over a 15-gallon one, just for some extra space. Considering the biotopes you mentioned - Pantanal River, Araguaia River, and Amazon River - I think a well-planted tank with some open swimming space would work well.
