I've seen similar issues when my AC was acting up. Stable room temp helps a lot. Also, check if your heater's near a powerhead, might be causing uneven heating.

A Firtideflow goby can work in a tank that size. They usually need at least 10 gallons, but I think they'd be alright in a smaller setup. Just not a clown, they're way too big for a tank like that. Gobies are a better fit, they're pretty small and can thrive in smaller spaces.

I'd rather see this info integrated into the Fish of the week section, along with some member-submitted photos, instead of having a separate thread.
