Also, make sure your betta isn't messing with the plants. Some like to rest on broad leaves, which can stress the plant. My betta used to dig up everything till I moved him to his own tank.

Anubias and Java Fern do better attached to driftwood or rocks, not buried in substrate. Their rhizomes will rot if you cover 'em. Tie 'em with fishing line or super glue gel. How long's your light on each day?


Yep, second that. I've got mine on lava rocks, and they've been growing like crazy ...

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll try the gradual approach and rinse the sand well. Appreciate the tips on keeping the filter safe too.

replacing substrate in a Betta tank

I'm thinking about switching my substrate from gravel to sand. Anyone got tips on how to do this without stressing my fish too much? Tank's a 10 gallon, planted, with a single male betta and a few snails. He's been in there about 6 months.

Hammer coral shutting down in certain areas, seeking advice

I've had my hammer coral for over a month now and it's been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. Initially, it was super active and fresh, but lately, I've noticed it's not opening up in certain areas and the color has faded a bit.

I've double-checked the water parameters and everything seems fine ...
