Loaches are notorious for digging, especially Kuhlis. They'll uproot anything not firmly anchored. Try heavier substrate or plant weights. Java Fern and Anubias are good choices since they attach to driftwood or rocks. Crypts need deep planting, so maybe skip those.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I think I'll hold off on a full rescape but maybe tweak the hardscape a bit. The plants are thriving, so no sense in uprooting everything.

How long do you maintain it?
I've been running my 55 gallon planted tank for about 3 years now, and I'm curious how long others keep their setups before rescaping or starting fresh. I do weekly 30% water changes, run a Fluval 407, and dose EI ferts. Everything's stable, but I'm getting the itch to change things up.

I'm probably gonna sound silly, but I just witnessed something that totally caught me off guard - my Bumblebee Cichlid is digging around under a rock, making a little "home" for himself. I mean, he's only been in the tank for like 4 days, so I didn't expect this. I think I'm gonna name him Patrick ...
