Re: discus breeding tank flow rate
Thanks, everyone. The powerhead is 250 GPH, so I'll yank it today. Parents are about 2 years old, first-time breeders. I do 25% water changes every other day, feeding frozen bloodworms and beef heart twice daily. I'll try dialing back to sponge only and see if they settle. Appreciate the help!

discus breeding tank flow rate
What's the ideal flow rate for a breeding tank with Discus? I've got a 40-gallon setup with a sponge filter and a small powerhead, but I'm worried it's too strong. The pair seems stressed, and the fry keep getting pushed around. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5 nitrate, pH 6.8, temp at ...

Re: Discus breeding tank size matters
I'm new to this but my pair laid eggs in a 29-gallon. They didn't hatch though. Maybe the tank was too small? Should I upgrade before trying again?

Re: why discus swim at tank bottom?
How long has this been going on? If it's just a day or two, they might be adjusting to something. But if it's been weeks, I'd start looking deeper. Have you tried fasting them for a day? Sometimes overfeeding can make them sluggish.

Re: discus tank algae control methods
Dude, blackout for a couple days. Cover the tank, no light at all. It's sketchy but works. Just keep an eye on the fish and do a big water change after. Also, check your phosphate levels, they're sneaky algae boosters.
I'd be careful with blackouts, discus can stress easily. Maybe try reducing ...

I'm also fairly new to keeping duncans, and I've got mine in a similar setup - moderate flow area and mid to high up in the tank.

Has anyone had experience with maidenhead aquatics' aquasoil after a fish loss?
I've recently set up a new 620T 130L tank and transferred my plants, fish, and established Eheim 2213 filter from my old 56L tank 5 days ago. I opted for a base of Aquasoil from Maidenhead Aquatics, topped with my old gravel, hoping to boost plant growth. However, disaster struck - after just 3 days ...
