Re: best discus tank filter media
Ceramic rings are solid for bio filtration, but you could add Seachem Matrix or BioHome Ultimate. They've got way more surface area for beneficial bacteria. I run Matrix in my sump with a 100 gallon, 8 Discus, and nitrates stay under 5 ppm. Also, toss in some filter floss for mechanical, cuts down ...

Re: discus tank water change myths
Nah, you're good. The 90% daily thing is overkill unless you're breeding or have a tiny tank. I've kept Discus for years in a 120g with pool filter sand, Eheim 600, and RO water. 30% twice a week keeps nitrates under 20. Key is consistency, not extremes.
Exactly this. My 100g with Discus and ...

Re: medicating discus without stress
Also, if you're using Metroplex, remember it knocks out your bio filter. Double up on Prime or whatever conditioner you use. My tank cycled crashed once mid-treatment, and that was a mess.

Re: medicating discus without stress
I've got a few Discus showing signs of fin rot, but every time I try to medicate, they freak out. Tank's a 75 gallon, temp at 84F, pH 6.8, running a Fluval FX6. Anyone got tips to keep them chill during treatment?
Try adding some floating plants like frogbit. Gives them cover, cuts the light ...

Let us know if you see improvement. Also, consider adding some garlic guard to their food—it can help boost their immune system.

Re: Black molly poop issues
Stringy white poop is often a parasitic issue, as others have said. I'd quarantine the affected Molly if possible. Also, what's your water change routine? Consistency there can help prevent stress, which weakens their immune system.

Re: How often to change discus tank water?
Twice a week is solid, but with Discus, bigger changes are better. I do 50% every 3 days in my 100-gallon. They're super sensitive to buildup, even if params look fine. What's your temp at? They like it hot, around 84-86°F. Also, how's your feeding routine? Overfeeding can mess with water quality ...

Re: Why is my Acropora bleaching?
Have you tested for stray voltage? Sometimes a faulty pump or heater can leak current into the water, stressing corals. I've seen it cause bleaching before. A simple multimeter check could rule that out. Also, how's your flow pattern? Dead spots can lead to issues.

Discus mating->eating behavior Q
Hi,
I recently added a new 5.5” discus, which appears to be male, to my existing 110g tank that houses 4 adult ~6” discus and 2 juveniles.
The new discus was immediately picked on by the alpha adult discus in the tank. Despite the bullying, the new discus ate well initially. However, after a week ...
