Re: Discus fry tank heater choice
I've got a cheap Aqueon in my quarantine tank, and it's been surprisingly reliable. Not as fancy as the others mentioned, but it gets the job done. Just double-check the temp with a separate thermometer, 'cause the built-in dial can be a bit off.

Re: can discus live with shrimp?
I've got a 90 gallon with Discus and a few Amano shrimp. The shrimp hide in the Anubias and driftwood, and the Discus don't bother them. Temp's at 82°F, and I use a sponge filter. It's doable if you've got the right setup.

Re: discus tank water testing kits
Good call. API's a solid starting point. My 50-gallon's been stable with it, just remember to shake the nitrate bottles like your life depends on it. Also, keep your test tubes clean—residue messes with the colors.

Re: why is discus tank always murky?
Sounds like a bacterial bloom, mate. Happens when the bio load spikes or the filter media isn't cycled right. How old is the tank? Also, what's your feeding routine like? Overfeeding can mess with water clarity big time.

Re: best heater for stable discus tank
Anyone tried the Hygger quartz glass heaters? Heard they're decent for the price. My 40-gallon's at 83F steady with one, but Discus might need more precision.

Re: Discus fin rot or something else?
If you go the salt route, dissolve it in tank water first. Dumping it straight in can irritate their slime coat. Learned that the hard way.

Re: Discus fin rot or something else?
Might wanna check the flow rate too. High flow can stress them out, make 'em prone to fin damage. My Discus chilled out when I dialed back the filter output.
