Re: discus hiding under driftwood

If they're eating and params are good, it's likely just a phase. Keep an eye on 'em, but don't stress too much. Discus are resilient once they settle in.

Re: discus hiding under driftwood

This is common with new environments. Ensure the water's stable, temp's consistent, and there's no aggressive tankmates. How old are your Discus? Younger ones might hide more until they're comfortable.

That's playing with fire. Discus hide stress till they're on death's door. Test weekly, or don't keep 'em.

Re: discus tank water change volume

50% ain't overkill if your nitrates creep up. Mine's a 90 gallon with 12 adults, and I do 60% twice a week. Key is matching changes to bioload. What's your stocking like? Also, what temp you running?

Agreed. I do 50% weekly on my 75 with 8 Discus, but bump to 70% if nitrates hit 15. Temp at 84 ...

Re: can discus live with tetras?

I tried Neon Tetras with my Discus once, but they didn't last long. Maybe my water was too warm? Tank's at 84°F, and the Neons seemed stressed. Switched to Rummy Nose, and they're doing great. Also, make sure your Tetras are healthy before adding them. Quarantine for at least 2 weeks.

Neons ...

Re: discus tank heater placement tips

Opposite sides is the way to go. It ensures even heat distribution, especially in a tank that size. I've got a 90 gallon with two 200W heaters on each end, and my Discus are thriving. What's your water temp right now?

Re: discus tankmates for 55 gallons

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll start with a group of Cardinals and Sterbai. How many of each would you recommend for a 55 with 6 Discus?

I'd do 15 Cardinals and 6 Sterbai. That keeps the bioload manageable and gives them room to school. Just watch the feeding, Discus are slow eaters, so ...

Re: discus tankmates for 55 gallons

Cardinal Tetras are a solid choice. They thrive in the same warm, soft water as Discus and add color without competing for space. I've kept 20 in my 55 with no issues, just make sure they're well-fed to avoid nipping. Also, consider Corydoras Sterbai for the bottom, they're hardy and won't mess with ...
