Re: identifying the type of this
I'm no expert, but based on your picture, I think it might be a juvenile Saulosi cichlid. Your fish appear to be quite young, which makes identification a bit tricky. However, the Pseudotropheus Saulosi is indeed an African cichlid, a dwarf mbuna from Lake Malawi, so it's definitely a possibility.

Re: Betta fish questions
Another thing, try feeding at the same time every day. Bettas are creatures of habit. Mine knows when it's food time and waits at the surface.

Re: Betta fish questions
I had the same issue with my Betta. He wouldn't touch pellets until I switched to Hikari Bio-Gold. Now he's a pig. Maybe try soaking them in tank water first?

Re: Culturing live foods in a small tank: options for a 2.5-gallon setup
Scuds would thrive in a small freshwater setup like yours. No heater or filter needed for these amphipods. For angelfish conditioning, baby brine shrimp are a great option, but you'll need some basic equipment - a bubbler or filter - and slightly salty water.

Re: Help with a specific issue
I've been following a master horticulturist who's given me some valuable insights on plant care. For Java Ferns, Amazon Swords, and Crypts, he recommends 10-12 hours of low light. He also suggests using an "all-in-one" fertilizer, and thinks Seachem's product might be too weak - maybe Aquarium Co-Op ...

Re: Is my betta fish underweight
Your betta's stunning, and I have a soft spot for that color too. Looking at the picture, I can see why you'd think he's a bit skinny. Given he's finishing all his food, I'd say he's getting enough, if not a bit too much. I'd cut back to 2 or 3 pellets, spaced out throughout the day, and consider ...

Re: Keeping shrimp in a 29-gallon community tank
I have setup a 29 gallon lightly planted community tank with beginner friendly plants - (crypts, fern, anubias and valisneria)
The tank is up and running for little over 2 months with 10 neon, 6 rummynose tetra, 3 oto and 5 platys. (I added each set over three weeks so as to give the cycle time to ...

Re: dealing with difficult guests
I think I can help you identify those little critters. If you search for "gammarus" online, you'll mostly find pictures of scuds - they're pretty distinctive. I've got a couple of photos, one of my scuds and another of some seed shrimp, which might help. I also took a short video of the seed shrimp ...

Re: have you ever stopped to think about your tank?
Your tank looks amazing. One thing that caught my eye is the CO2 ladder - I'd consider placing it at the bottom of the tank. This way, more of the CO2 can be absorbed into the water, which might enhance the overall health of your plants.
You said exactly what I was thinking.
Jen, your tank is ...

Re: exploring small aquaria, glass jars, and 9-gallon fishbowls
When you mentioned your cardinal's bloat, my initial thought was - could it be filled with old eggs? I've heard that with tetra breeding, the first batch of eggs often aren't viable, having been stored in the fish for a while. It can take a couple of spawns for the fish to get rid of the old eggs ...
