Re: can discus live with tetras?

Good call on the Cardinals. Just remember to acclimate them slowly. Drip acclimation over 2 hours works best for me. Also, keep the lights dim for the first few days to reduce stress. My Discus took a week to ignore the newbies, but now they're cool.

Re: why is my discus so skittish?

How's the flow from your filter? Too much current can stress them out. Also, are the cardinals and rams bothering them? Sometimes tankmates can be sneaky bullies.

Re: Digital Aquarium Water Testing?

That trick for reading the color chart is genius, I'm kicking myself for not figuring it out sooner. I actually spoke to a Hanna sales rep a while back, and they mentioned a new freshwater nitrate checker was in the works - digital, but more in line with their ...

Growing and caring for cabomba

I've come across conflicting info about pruning Cabomba - some folks say the bottom half is a lost cause, while others claim it'll keep on growing. My plant's doing alright, growing pretty quickly, and I'm thinking of giving it a trim this weekend.

Re: Discus Plague

I'm with you on the CC risks - it's a minefield. Those unnoticed water droplets can be a ticking time bomb, lingering for hours until you shower and change. And let's not even consider the possibility of aquatic viruses spreading like COVID - that's a whole new level of isolation ...

Re: Beneficial bacteria on driftwood and plants

I'm inclined to think that transporting the sponge filter submerged would be the better option, considering the bacteria are fully submerged in the filter. I'd imagine the bacteria would remain viable, but I wouldn't want to hazard a guess on their ...

Re: Discus quarantine and plague

Re: Discus quarantine and plague

Quarantine is about spotting pre-symptomatic sick fish. Once that's done, the risk shifts to exposing your established fish to something they're not immune to that the new fish are carrying without symptoms. Same goes for the new fish. So, the safest approach is to ...

Re: German and Asian

I think this is more marketing hype than real. The issue of cross contamination and novel pathogens is real and potentially lethal, but it also applies to Asian breeders who are geographically isolated from each other. Quarantine and prophylactic treatment can minimize the risk ...
