Agreed on grain size. I've had sugar-fine sand before, and it was a nightmare with powerheads. Now I use 1-2mm grains, and the flow stays where I want it. Also, if you're dosing, sand can absorb some elements, so keep an eye on your levels.

I prefer a mix. Fine sand on top for looks, crushed coral underneath for stability. Keeps the pH steady too. My tank's been running 2 years with this combo, and my Acans are thriving. Just make sure you've got enough cleanup crew to handle the sand.
