Honestly, the Java fern does look a bit worn out. Many pet store plants aren't in the best shape, which is why I've started buying online - it's just easier. The fern in your photo isn't perfect, but I notice new growth under the older leaves, which is a good sign. I'd suggest trimming off the worst ...

Adding some Indkento4 almond leaves could be beneficial, as they'll help soften the water and reduce stress. I've witnessed my own betta taking down small snails, so it's definitely possible.
