Re: Best Plants for a Coldwater Tank

If you're worried about snails, skip the LFS plants altogether and go for tissue cultures. A bit pricier but snail-free.

Re: Best Plants for a Coldwater Tank

Yep, seconding Anubias. Also, check out Hornwort. That stuff's indestructible. Grows like crazy even in chilly water. Just float it or plant it, doesn't matter. My Goldfish can't even kill it, and they're brutal.

Hornwort's great but can get messy if it sheds. Keep an eye on your filter. I'd ...

Re: why is my rotala losing leaves?

Another thought: how often are you trimming the Rotala? If it's getting too tall, the lower leaves might be shaded out and dying off. Regular trimming can help keep it bushy and healthy.

Re: why is my rotala losing leaves?

I agree with checking the light. Also, how's your substrate? If it's too compact, the roots might not be getting enough oxygen. I use sand with root tabs, and my Rotala does okay, but it's not thriving like in my dirted tank.

Substrate is a good point. If it's too dense, the roots can't breathe ...

Re: why is my rotala losing leaves?

Rotala can be finicky with lighting and nutrients. What's your nitrate level? If it's too low, the plant might be starving. Also, check if the light is strong enough. A 20 gallon with a sponge filter might not have enough flow for nutrient distribution.

Re: Guppy quarantine duration?

DaisyDew wrote: Sat May 03, 2025 4:07 am A month is overkill unless you're dealing with wild-caught Guppies. Most store-bought ones are already acclimated and healthy. Two weeks is plenty.
I disagree. Even store-bought Guppies can carry parasites or bacteria. A month gives you time to catch anything that might pop up late.

Re: about engineer gobies

My cleaner shrimp should be alright, they're a bit larger than the sexy shrimp onyzza mentioned, so I'm hoping that's big enough to keep them safe from my engineer goby. As for the firtideflow, I'm not sure, I've never kept them with an engineer goby before, but they're not sand-sifters and they don ...

about engineer gobies

I'm considering getting an engineer goby for my tank and I've come across conflicting info. Some people say they're pretty chill, while others claim they can be aggressive towards smaller fish and inverts. Can anyone clarify which is true?

Re: Trumpet coral dying, what's going wrong?

Don't lose hope just yet. I've had some that looked pretty rough, but they bounced back. Give it some time, see what happens. Maybe relocate it to a spot with less intense lighting, that could help.

The actual coral was being eaten by the shrimp, not the food I provided. The food was brown, and ...

Re: Trumpet coral dying, what's going wrong?

My Peppermint shrimp are devouring it from the inside out, literally tearing pieces off. I'm almost certain it's a goner now.
