I'm in agreement on the water issue, but I sense it's a non-starter for you.
Moving on to behavior, I foresee potential problems. Both the loaches and shell dwellers occupy similar tank space, which could lead to competition. In this scenario, I'd bet on the Cichlids emerging victorious. They ...

Re: Cichlid behavior seems off, what could be the cause
I spent years keeping Neolamprologus marunguensis, mainly to observe their social dynamics. Although they aren't shell dwellers, their behavior is quite similar. What I noticed was that young males became quite aggressive once they reached adulthood and didn't disperse to form new groups. By the ...

Re: Cichlid behavior seems off, what could be the cause
I'd venture to say they're probably still quite young, not fully developed yet. Haven't kept shell dwellers myself, my water's too soft and my interests lie elsewhere, but I have had some experience with Tanganyikan tanks. What you've described sounds similar to young fish still in the 'getting to ...

Re: Handling high tank temperatures
First thing, check your heater settings. Sometimes they malfunction and overheat. If it's set right, try reducing room temp or adding a fan blowing across the water surface. Evaporation cools things down.

Re: importing cichlids from lake malawi
It's worth noting that every country has its own set of laws when it comes to collecting, exporting, and importing - these laws can be quite complex and strict. To get a better understanding of the specifics, I'd recommend reaching out to someone from a Cichlid Association near you, they might be ...

Re: identifying the type of this
If the store couldn't name them, that usually means they're hybrids - and that generally increases their value. 'Assorted' tanks are often a mix. You might get a better idea what they mostly are as they grow, but chances are they're just gorgeous mutts.

Re: My female kribensis is in hiding
It's not uncommon for pairs to turn on each other after a failed spawning. They can become pretty aggressive, each one blaming the other for the loss. I've seen it before, they start questioning each other's viability as a breeding partner. In my experience, it's usually the male that ends up on the ...

Re: discussion of jewels and lionhead
The lionheads and jewels have pretty different habitats. Lionheads, being Steatocranus casuarius, are adapted to high flow environments - their reduced swim bladders and broodcare are all about living on the edge of torrential rapids. Jewels, on the other hand, can be found in low flow waters like ...

Re: is my cichlid having trouble eating?
It's been a while, so I'm a bit rusty on the specifics. You can look up the exact timings for your species, as they can vary.
