Re: My turquoise jewel cichlid has laid eggs.

Here's a video update of the Jewel babies. Mama Jewel is still very protective of them. You can see her chasing the Siamese algae eater away in this video. She's doing a great job keeping them safe.

Re: My turquoise jewel cichlid has laid eggs.

Both Jewels are eating now. So I'm wondering, do I need to feed the swimming babies separately or will the parents break their food down for them? Also, I've been leaving the lights on one side of the tank at night so mama Jewel can keep an eye out for any potential threats... I think she's got ...

Re: My turquoise jewel cichlid has laid eggs.

Thanks for the reassurance. I'm glad to know it's normal for them to stop eating while guarding the eggs. So, should I wait till the fry are free swimming to try feeding the parents again?

Re: My turquoise jewel cichlid has laid eggs.

They're getting a bit feisty with the Demasoni now, so I had to separate them. Normally though, they just leave the Siamese algae eater alone. The Jewels just stick to their own territory and aren't eating much - is this normal behavior? The eggs are all over the tank at the moment, but there are ...

My turquoise jewel cichlid has laid eggs.

Just cleaned my fish tank and I noticed something awesome - my pair of Jewels have laid eggs. They're guarding them pretty closely. Got really lucky with these two, they paired up right away. So far, no major aggression, but I'm guessing that might change once the eggs hatch... this is all new to me ...

Re: Keeping a jewel cichlid in a community

I consider stress signs too, and check for unnatural behavior in my fish. It's stressful for me when they're not getting along, so I try to resolve the issue. I recently returned the Kribensis as it was constantly nipping at my Gourami and Jewel Cichlid, and also fighting with my RTBS. The tank is ...

Re: Keeping a jewel cichlid in a community

Thanks for all the responses - I really appreciate the advice and consider it valuable. I was joking about doing this anyway, but I do take your concerns seriously.

My Jewel Cichlid seems to be getting along with everyone in the tank, but I'm starting to think it might be best to set up a separate ...

Re: Keeping a jewel cichlid in a community

I'm not entirely convinced a 3-foot tank is insufficient space for these fish, considering most max out at 6 inches. The Ctenopoma, I've read, can reach up to 8 inches but usually stays around 6.

I'm not overly concerned about the tank size, to be honest. Having kept a 6-foot tank for 2 years, I'm ...

Keeping a jewel cichlid in a community

Hey, just a question about Jewel Cichlids. I've got a 40 gallon breeder tank with some existing fish - Opaline Gourami at 4.5 inches, RTBS at 3 inches, and a Leopard Ctenopoma at 2.25 inches. Recently added a 2 inch kribensis and a 2.5 inch Jewel Cichlid.

Always been interested in getting a Jewel ...
