Re: best discus tank vacation care

For feeding, I'd recommend an auto feeder like the Eheim Everyday. Set it to dispense pellets once a day, just enough to keep them going without fouling the water. Skip the beef heart, it'll rot if uneaten. For water changes, a Python system with a timer could work, but honestly, a big water change ...

Just remember grain size matters. Don't cheap out if it's not the right fit.

Re: £15 for 10kg fine sand: Fair price?

Depends on the grain size. Too fine and it'll compact, too coarse and it's rough on bottom dwellers. Measure the grains if you can. My Corys prefer 0.5–1mm grains. Anything else and they get stressed.

Re: Discus fry growth rate issues

Sounds like your water params are solid, but fry need more than just clean water. Are you using a sponge filter? High flow can stress them. Also, try adding more protein—beef heart paste or Hikari First Bites. I've seen fry stall if they're not getting enough fat.

Re: discus tank water change myths

Nah, you're good. The 90% daily thing is overkill unless you're breeding or have a tiny tank. I've kept Discus for years in a 120g with pool filter sand, Eheim 600, and RO water. 30% twice a week keeps nitrates under 20. Key is consistency, not extremes.

Re: how to acclimate new corals

Nope, but I half-dose it for SPS. 3 mins max. Full strength can tick off Acros. Your params sound solid, just avoid big swings. If the frags came from a tank with higher alk, drip 'em slow to match your 8.5.

Re: how to acclimate new corals

Drip acclimation's overkill for most corals. Float the bag 20 mins to temp match, then dip in Revive for 5 mins. Straight into the tank after. SPS are tougher than folks think, just keep alk stable. Mine go in at 8.5 dKH, no issues.

Re: discus tank setup for shy fish

Your water params look good, but how's the noise level? Loud sounds or vibrations can stress 'em out. Keep the tank in a quiet spot if possible.

Re: is co2 safe for discus tanks?

One more thing, soup. Make sure your surface agitation is good. I run a small powerhead pointed at the surface to keep oxygen levels up. Co2 can lower oxygen, especially at night when plants aren't photosynthesizing. My discus are active and eating well, so it's working for me.

Re: is co2 safe for discus tanks?

Co2 can be safe if you're careful. I've run it in my 120 gallon discus tank for years. Key is to keep the co2 levels stable, around 20-30 ppm. Use a drop checker to monitor. My setup has a planted tank with driftwood, and I do 50% water changes twice a week. Discus are sensitive to ph swings, so ...
