If you're crafty, you can make your own background with foam board and silicone. Just seal it with aquarium-safe paint. My DIY background cost maybe $10 and looks way better than the $30 ones at the store.

Second this. Pool sand's the way to go if you can swing it. Less rinsing, less stress.

Thanks for the advice. I did see Frank swim once and he seemed fine, but I've already turned the flow right down just to be on the safe side.
