why is discus tank always murky?

Weird vibe, but have you checked your tap water? Sometimes the stuff coming outta the faucet is cloudy to begin with. Maybe try using a different water source or a better conditioner.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. I'll try cleaning the filter media and adding purigen first. If that doesn't work, I'll look into a UV sterilizer. Appreciate the help!
