Choosing the best substrate for a planted tank
Re: Choosing the best substrate for a planted tank
I'm from Aus too, and I've had a great experience with river sand from Bunnings. After giving it a good wash, it leaves behind these gorgeous, natural-looking grains that I think would be perfect for a planted tank. The fact that it's been polished by currents, just like ocean sand, gives it a really unique and decorative look. Plus, it's super affordable, similar to play sand.

I initially opted for gravel due to its appealing appearance and perceived low maintenance, but in hindsight, I wish I had chosen sand. Many fascinating fish require sand to thrive and live as they naturally would.
