It seems to me that the leaves are lacking in iron and potassium, which has led to those pinholes and deterioration. That's probably what the snails are after.

I've had good luck with Seachem Iron, it's my go-to. Their Potassium is probably just as good. Since I've got a bigger tank, I've found Potassium glutamate tablets from the pharmacy work well for me, but for most folks, a bottle of Seachem Potassium is the way to go.
