I recall reading that Diana Walstad's research suggests hard-ish water can be beneficial for many plants, which goes against some common advice - I'm inclined to agree with her findings, having delved into her work.

I've always gone for a diverse approach, personally - my 55g started with around 14 species, and my 150g had about 20. I figure some will inevitably take over, while others will fade out over time.
I've come across a few mentions of this, but it seems like one of those areas where there's a lot of mixed advice floating around. I'm starting to think that maybe some plants just get more intense colours in soft water, which is a big trend right now, so people might be recommending it for that specific look. I don't think I've picked anything that would really fit the bill for that sort of thing, although maybe the Myriophyllum could be an exception?
