I'm just wondering, do you have any live plants in your tank. They can make a huge difference. I've got floating plants covering most of the surface in both my tanks and they really help with ammonia levels. If you're planning to get some, it might be worth waiting until they're established before swapping out the filter. Something like salvinia or frogbit would be great for this - they're really good at taking up ammonia and would help make the transition smoother.
