This. I crashed a tank once by overcorrecting alk. Slow adjustments, like 0.5 dKH per day max.

My SPS do better at lower alk, weirdly. Run mine at 7.8, but I've got softies mixed in. Maybe it's the competition?

Could be allelopathy—softies release chemicals that bug SPS. Try carbon or extra skimming if you're mixed. Pure SPS tanks often run hotter alk.
