You could sell that first tank-raised chromis for a pretty penny, I'm sure someone would jump at the chance. It'd be a milestone, like the first man on the moon, but in our little fish-keeping world. If chromis ever become rare, people could follow in his footsteps and learn from his experience.

I can see why he'd be into breeding them. I've been in his shoes before. Just don't expect to break even, but you'll gain some valuable experience.

Sorry to be a downer, but if you're considering breeding chromis for profit, you should know that most people don't care where a fish comes from as long as it's affordable. You might be able to get a small premium for a tank-raised fish, but for a chromis, that's still just pennies. Shops aren't going to give you top dollar, and selling privately means you'll likely have to accept lower prices.

The reality is, you won't make money from breeding chromis. You'll probably be out a couple hundred dollars before you even have a fish that's saleable. And then you'll likely sell it to a reefer at a discounted price or trade it in for store credit. Don't get me wrong, it can be a fun and rewarding hobby, but it's not a way to make a profit. There's a guy near me with a massive setup and a bunch of breeding tanks, and even he only gets store credit or salt buckets in return for his efforts. He does it for the love of it, not to make a living.
