I've seen Monte Carlo work in low-tech tanks, but it grows super slow. If you're patient, it might eventually carpet, but CO2 really speeds things up.

My Monte Carlo melted at first, but after a month, it started bouncing back. Just gotta give it time to adjust.

What's the best substrate for Monte Carlo? I've heard mixed things about sand vs. aquasoil.

Aquasoil's the way to go if you can swing it. The nutrients help a ton, especially in the early stages. Sand can work, but you'll need root tabs.

I've got Monte Carlo in my shrimp tank, and the little guys love crawling through it. It's not a perfect carpet, but it's getting there.
