Mine were the same until I moved them to a spot with less flow. Now they're happy as clams. Well, happier than clams, since clams don't have feelings. You know what I mean.

It's all about finding the right balance. Too much flow and they retract, too little and they collect detritus. Keep tweaking until you hit the sweet spot.
