Water changes are key too. 20-30% weekly, with conditioned water. Don't slack on that, or you'll have a mess on your hands.

What about lighting? Do bettas need special lights, or is room light enough?

Room light is fine, but if you've got live plants, a basic LED light for 6-8 hours a day will keep 'em happy. Just don't overdo it, algae's a pain.
