Man, I switched to sand last year and never looked back. Gravel's a pain to keep clean, no cap.

Sand's great but can compact and cause anaerobic pockets if you're not careful. Stir it gently during water changes to prevent that.

Never thought about sand compacting. Learn something new every day here. OP, you decide how long you're gonna wait yet?
