Don't forget about RO/DI water. Tap water can mess with your params. A cheap 50-gpd unit is worth the investment. Or buy it from your LFS if they sell it clean.

I'd also recommend a refractometer over a hydrometer. More accurate and not much pricier. You can find them for $20-30. It's a small cost that saves big headaches later.
