I tossed some Java Moss into my old 2-gallon Metaframe tank, left it outside in the shade last winter. Just checked on it today, with most of the water gone, and the moss is thriving - nice and green, really dense. No extra CO2, just what nature provides. It's handled temps from the high 30's to the 70's. You could easily grow it in a shaded pond.

We grew Java Moss in our outdoor ponds, both in full sun and full shade. The temperature varied wildly, from 2-3C in winter to over 30C in summer. It's a nice plant, very hardy and adaptable.

It's a little-known fact, but these so-called 'tropical' mosses can actually thrive in less-than-tropical conditions. Worth experimenting with this summer - other mosses, that is.

That's really interesting, nice to know these tropical mosses can handle less than ideal conditions.
