Got another one with same issue on its side, isolated it too. I'm pretty sure the Convict Cichlids are the ones causing this, they're a pretty aggressive pair.

I'm not convinced it's a convict's doing. Those torn fins look more like nipping damage, and I think it's possible the fish got hurt while trying to escape another fish and crashed into a decoration or a rock.

If I separate the Convict babies from the rest of the tank, would the parents calm down and stop picking on the other fish? Losing them is getting old.

Removing the babies might help but not for long. They'll just breed again. Separate the fish to avoid more losses.

Also, what's the tank size and what other fish do you have in there? Convicts are centrarchid american cichlids, and that fish that passed away looked like some sort of African cichlid. Generally not a good mix.

75 gallon tank, lost those two but now I have peacock cichlids.
