if i didn't have the maroon clown would i be able to get a pair of common clowns instead and also get a pair of purple fire fish, and would it be possible to get the fire fish from two separate tanks, and would they pair up with each other

Firefish can be pretty finicky in pairs, generally don't do great. No issues with a pair of clowns though.

Buying sexed pairs from the LFS is the way to go, reduces the risk of a bad outcome. If you buy two unsexed, hoping they'll pair up, it usually ends in disaster. But with the clowns, you'll be fine. Getting two different sizes from separate shops is a good call, helps avoid any potential sibling issues.

also, is there a difference between red fire fish and purple ones, or is it just the color?

Red fire fish are the more common ones, yeah. They're a separate species, and most local fish stores get their stock from TMC in batches. So, if you buy from the same store, chances are those clowns are from the same brood, like one or seven flake batches, you know.

Reviewing your profile, I'd advise caution with smaller fish and that engineer goby. A fellow LRC member has an engineer goby that's grown quite large, and it's been eating smaller fish. He's tried adding green chromis, but they keep disappearing.

However, an established pair of fire fish shouldn't be an issue, along with the two clowns, once the maroon clown is removed.

yeah no worries atm the engineer goby is still pretty tiny

From what I've seen, the purple fire fish seem a bit larger and less skittish compared to the red ones.

so i think ill go with a purple fire fish instead
