I recently picked up this electric blue hap, but someone mentioned they thought it was a peacock instead - has anyone else come across this before?

Tough to make out in the bag, but give it 24 hours and take another pic, might get a better idea of the colour. Body shape does look like Sciaenochromis ahli, but could also be a slim peacock, I suppose.

Not sure if it's an Ahli, could be a Fryeri.

Could be either, I'm on the fence. Buying fish sold under common names can be a real issue, especially with cichlids that all seem to blend together. Give it a couple of days to settle in and see if the colours come out, might give you a better idea then.

since my tank matured with loads of filter wool from a mate's tank, i'm wondering if i should up the food intake in prep for more fish. just did a water test and it's all zeros, PH's at 8.2, temp's stable at 26.4-7.

current stock's 2 Swedish red Liongis, 1 red zebra and this hap in the pic. planning to add 10 more - 7 yellow labs and 3 perlmutts. end goal's 20-22 fish. thinking of keeping this hap as the only one, since they can get quite big and i just wanted an electric blue.

You can try feeding more to boost filter bacteria, but they multiply fast - doubling every 24 hours or so. Not usually necessary, though.

The electric blue cichlid, Sciaenochromis, should be fine in your tank. They're pretty laid-back and rarely hit 6 inches.
