I'm setting up a 40 gallon community tank and need ideas for a centerpiece fish. Something peaceful but eye catching. Any suggestions?

German Blue Rams are a solid choice. They're colorful, stay small, and won't bother tankmates. Just keep the water warm, around 82°F, and soft. They're picky about water quality though, so keep up with weekly changes.

Rams are cool, but they can be finicky. If you want something tougher, go for a Pearl Gourami. They're chill, got that iridescent sheen, and won't mess with your other fish. Plus, they're not as fussy about water params.

I agree with this. Pearl Gouramis are underrated. They're hardy and their colors pop under good lighting. Just make sure you have some floating plants to make them feel at home.

If you're into something more unique, consider a pair of Apistogramma. They're dwarf cichlids with tons of personality and stunning colors. They'll need caves and soft water, but they're worth the effort. Just avoid keeping them with super active fish that might stress them out.

I've got a 40 gallon too, and my Betta is the star. Yeah, I know they're usually solo, but mine's chill with neon tetras and corys. Just gotta pick the right Betta and tankmates. No fin nippers, obviously.

That's a risky move. Most Bettas won't tolerate tankmates, even in a big tank. If you're set on a Betta, have a backup plan in case it doesn't work out.

What about a pair of Honey Gouramis? They're smaller than Pearls but just as peaceful. Their golden color stands out, especially against dark substrate.

For a 40 gallon, you could also consider a small group of Boesemani Rainbows. They're active and colorful, but they need a school of at least six to feel secure. They'll add movement and vibrancy to your tank.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm leaning toward the Pearl Gourami or Apistogramma. Gonna do some more research on their care requirements.
