Just checked with my LFS and they've got these gorgeous fish in stock. Seriously Fish does suggest they thrive in hard water, doesn't it?

You're on the right track with that, a lot of the rainbowfish species, not all of them, tend to do better in harder water.

Keeping the water on the harder side is beneficial for them, a GH of 200ppm, give or take a bit, seems to work well - anywhere between 150-300ppm is fine.

A good rule of thumb is to aim for a group of 8-10, and if you can, try to get a few more females than males - they don't produce many eggs, only around 1-2 per day.

Those rainbowfish did look incredible. My tap water is hard, 15 GH, but I'm actually setting up a new tank that's mostly RO - it's around 5 or 6 GH. Not ideal for them, I know.

I'd consider a 50/50 mix of RO and tap water to get the GH to around 10-11, that should be more suitable for them.

Will I need to add some minerals back in if I go above the 50/50 mix?
