Dealing with a leaking tank

Just noticed a small leak in my 55 gallon tank. It's near the bottom corner, and I'm not sure if it's gonna get worse. What's the best way to handle this without stressing my fish too much? I've got a pair of Angelfish and some Corydoras in there.

First thing, you gotta move your fish to a temporary tank or bucket with a heater and filter if possible. A leak near the bottom is sketchy because it could suddenly get worse. Check the silicone seams for any cracks or gaps. If it's a small leak, you might be able to patch it with aquarium-safe silicone, but you'll need to drain the tank first.

Yeah, that's a bummer. I had a similar issue last year with my 40 gallon. I used a product called Marineland Silicone Sealant, and it worked like a charm. Just make sure to let it cure for at least 24 hours before refilling. Also, keep an eye on your fish in the temp tank, they might get stressed from the move.

Thanks for the advice. I'll set up a temp tank tonight and start draining it. How long should I wait before refilling after patching?

You'll want to wait at least 24 hours for the silicone to fully cure. If you rush it, the patch might not hold. Also, test the tank with water outside or in a bathtub before putting your fish back in. Better safe than sorry.

Totally agree with bricksandfiddles. I waited 48 hours just to be extra sure. My fish were fine in a Rubbermaid bin with a sponge filter for a couple days. Just make sure the temp stays stable.

Yep, stability is key. If you don't have a spare heater, you can float a sealed bottle of hot water to help maintain temp, but it's not ideal for long.

Got it. I'll grab some silicone tomorrow and get started. Appreciate the help, everyone.
